ItsMonday

It’s Monday! 1/16/2023

IT’S MONDAY! I believe the antics of the Republican-led House will entertain us for months to come, the comic relief will be priceless. The policies and ‘wanna doos’ they are currently pushing are the policies and ideas that led to the Republican disaster of Nov 2022. So, let’s take a different tack this week to a subject that affects us all but little is ever said or done in conjunction with it. That would be getting involved and running for a county or local office.

CountyCommissioners are up this cycle. Our Democratic Commissioner, Jeff Pisarcik is running for reelection. We should all get behind Jeff in his effort to continue to serve because he does an excellent job representing Democrats and Jefferson County. Other county offices open in this election cycle are Sheriff, Auditor, and Register and Recorder. These positions obviously require a more complicated skill set, but with the exception of Sheriff, these positions can be won by ordinary citizens. These county positions require at least 100 signatures. Have I tweaked anyone’s interest?

Local office means, School Boards, Boro Councils, and Township Supervisors. Most of these positions go unchallenged. It is very simple to run for these positions. It takes a mere ten signatures to appear on the primary ballot. Once there it’s almost guaranteed that you will carry through to the fall ballot. It is important to challenge these positions. Too many times these local positions are filled with Republicans by default because no Democrats file to run!

If we get Democrats on the ballot, some of them will win. Getting reelected then becomes easier because incumbents always have a leg up. People getting elected to these local offices is what is called building a bench. It means having people with experience in public service who may then have the desire or feel the need to vie for county or state positions. Learning how to deal with budgets, personnel and constituencies is a challenging yet fulfilling proposition. You don’t have to be a genius or super educated to do these jobs, you just need to possess a desire to make your community and schools a better place to live and learn.

Time is running short. If you have an interest, petition signing is coming up fast. We will help you in any way that we can. The Party and the Jefferson County folks will thank you.
