ItsMonday

It’s Monday! 1/23/2023

IT’S MONDAY! I would think that after listening to me rant, in this column and in person, for the last two or three years, you would know that I am a Liberal Democrat, not a communist or socialist operative. In my personal life and my political life, I try to promote policies and actions that would benefit society as a whole and that are fair and equitable, both socially and economically.

I have a hard time trying to figure out what it is this current iteration of the Republican Party hopes to accomplish. I recently saw an article that stated there were over 1400 cases of voter fraud being investigated across the country. I would assume that these were overwhelmingly individuals who voted, either intentionally or mistakenly, when they were not eligible to do so. That does not come close to an attempt to steal an election, and even in an off-year when a very conservative estimate of say 100 million people voted, that is less than 2 ten thousandths of 1%. That is a number so minuscule it is a virtual zero. The point is that we must keep stuff in perspective. Wild and crazy claims can be taken down with common sense.

Republicans have said that they are going to hold the debt ceiling hostage for cuts in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Joe Biden has said he will not negotiate on this issue. I would characterize it as Joe Biden will not jeopardize the health and well-being of America’s senior citizens over a non-negotiable issue, paying the bill!

Last Monday we had Jill Beck in town for a meet and greet. Ms. Beck is running for Superior Court. She is an excellent candidate who has tons of experience both clerking for the Court and arguing before it. If you did not get the chance to meet Ms. Beck this week, I’m sure she will be back in Jefferson County soon. There are 7 individuals looking to get elected to 4 seats on the State-wide courts. It will be petition-signing soon starting on Feb 14th and lasting three weeks. We will host signing events during that period. Plan to stop by and support the candidates of your choice. When events are scheduled, they will be posted in this column and on Facebook.

As always, PARTICIPATE! CONTRIBUTE! VOTE!
It is more important now than ever before.
