ItsMonday

It’s Monday! 2/27/2023

IT’S MONDAY! again. This past week we marked the one-year anniversary of the Ukraine War. I do this without any joy or expectation this conflict will end soon. The celebration, if you can call it that, is the success of the Government and People of Ukraine to thwart the aggression of Russia. In stark contrast to Trump, who disparaged and threatened to destroy NATO, President Biden bolstered and coalesced the NATO Alliance into an unprecedented position of strength. The real tragedy is that trillions of dollars of damage are being done to the country. People are living in basements and subway stations. The Russians have been good at making large rocks into little ones, but they have not diminished the Spirit of Ukraine by one ounce. I am troubled by those in our legislative body who are openly supporting Putin and Russia. I wonder where their loyalties lie.

Republican efforts to limit access to the vote, establish a religious rule, and promote a fascist authoritarian state have not diminished. The actual wrongdoing of these actors is evident for all to see. Our system has served us well for over two hundred years. Sometimes it is messy and confrontational, but it works well when people with differing points of view approach the debate honestly and factually. One party seems to have lost that value set and sows discord and lies for their own sake. Elected officials who violate their oath of office need to be taken to task for their transgressions. If they do not police themselves, we, the voters, must remove them through the ballot box.

Petition signing is still ongoing through this week. If you have an opportunity, show your support for our good Democratic candidates by helping to get them on the ballot. Demstock is coming to Jefferson County. Planning is underway and we will keep you updated. There will be fantastic opportunities for volunteering and participation. Save the dates, Aug. 11-13, 2023.
