ItsMonday

It’s Monday! 3/13/2023

IT’S MONDAY! I was listening to the Thom Hartman radio show last Friday and a fellow came on with this hypothesis. He said that we should refrain from using the terms left-wing vs. right-wing because, he says, leftists use the government to control the people and rightists use corporate power to control the people. Then he added, Fascists do both but Liberals do neither, I assume because they try to find equitable solutions to problems. He stopped there and made no mention of conservatives but if he had, again I assume they would be the counterpoint and the buffer to the liberal point of view.

This paradigm could work if our leaders and decision-makers work in the middle where ideas intersect. Unfortunately, we are all over the spectrum here. Where do you think current Democrats and Republicans reside in this spectrum? Are we on the edges working to control people, or are we more toward the center, seeking to govern for the good of the nation as a whole?

As Democrats, we believe in Democracy and Core Democratic Values. These values would start with America’s fundamental ideal that all people are created equal. Notice that it is equal period. There are no modifiers here. Not for skin color, not for sex or sexual orientation, not for religion or lack thereof, and not for social or economic status. We believe the founding documents demand Freedom, Justice, and Opportunity for all Americans, regardless of who you are, what you believe, or where you live. We believe that the duty of government is to strive to make these ideals a reality for all. We believe that the purpose of government is to protect and defend our nation and democracy and promote our welfare.

Fighting for these ideals is our purpose as a political party. Read the creed in full and learn more about Democrats 101 at www.dems101.org/the-creed.

There are persuadable voters out there. I’m sure we won’t capture them by calling them stupid or racist. But maybe we can break through the passive racism and bigotry of people who believe they are not racist and then passively allow those ideas to fester among their friends and family. We may not turn voters into registered Democrats, but we may help them become responsible voters. That would be a major step toward normalcy.
