Wow, it’s Monday again, and what a week it was! I hope that I can recall all the highlights of the past week. Most importantly, I think, is the 350+ million dollar judgement leveled against Trump and others in his business. They also cannot do business in the State of New York for the next three years without having a compliance monitor. Judge Engoron hit Trump where it hurts him the most, in the wallet.
The next best MAGA failure came on Tuesday in Long Island where the seat vacated by George Santos was won by a Democrat. Trump was crying that the Republican in the race lost because she was not MAGA enough. Really, I thought the opposite was true, those voters had experienced too much MAGA. The Republican margin in The House is now so razor thin that a couple more Special Election wins by Democrats may put Hakim Jefferies as Speaker before the November Election.
The main Republican witness for the House Impeachment Inquiry into Joe Biden was indicted for lying to the FBI. This negated virtually all the so-called evidence of wrongdoing by the President. Representative Jim Comer said not to worry, we will forge ahead and will find someone else to lie for us.
In other news, not so earth shattering but still important, a judge found that the hush money trial will go as scheduled in New York. This trial has criminal implications for Trump. In an unrelated, but important issue, the smoky embers under the Matt Gaetz sex scandal pot is starting to heat up. We don’t know what we don’t know, but the investigation has been reopened. One last item of import, Trump said, and it’s on tape, that he would encourage Putin to do what he wants.to NATO countries that don’t pay their fair share.
Republicans have no message, no platform, and no moral compass. They have abandoned border security, support for police and the military, promotion of democracy, support of our allies, and any semblance of rational governance. They now support authoritarianism, Putin, chaos, and they want to see an economic decline only because they think it will hurt Joe Biden.
We all know what the response is, deny, deflect, and accuse.
There will always be the Trump base voters, who are a portion of a minority party. They are, however, very loud, and get an outsized portion of media attention. There will always be the Democratic base voters, who may be a little more liberal, but who never get mentioned. Neither of these two extremes is enough to win an election. There is a large group of voters consisting of more moderate to liberal Republicans, more moderate to conservative Democrats, and Independents and other centrist types. This is the group of somewhat persuadable individuals that we must capture a majority of to win in November. I am heartened by the staving off of the red wave in 2022 and all the recent Democratic success, but we must support our party financially, engage in activities, talk to voters, and speak truth to insanity. We also have a Candidate for Congress, Zach Womer, who deserves our financial support. We cannot expect him to effectively challenge GT Thompson unless he is able to make appearances around the district and produce campaign materials.
One final note on donations. Yes, we ask for money, but only as you are able to give. We are working to achieve a certain outcome, a common goal. I just need you to be honest with yourself about what that donation threshold is. You also need to consider if what you may donate to the DNC, the Biden campaign, other national Democratic groups, and out of state candidates, all with war chests in the millions, might better be spent locally.

Donations Needed and Accepted
The Jefferson County Democratic Committee (JeffDems) is funded through donations (we do not get funding from the state). We rely on the generosity of local Democrats to enable all of our initiatives and hopefully, in August – November, an Office/HQ to function as “JeffDems Central” before the critical Fall Election. Please make it one of your New Year’s resolutions, to start a monthly recurring donation to JeffDems, large or small, using the ActBlue link below, or of course, one-time donation checks are welcome! Contribute so that your county committee can do more on your behalf. Thank you!
