ItsMonday

It’s Monday! 1/22/2024

It’s Monday again and I’m at a loss for what to talk about.  We have discussed a lot of topics, some of them several times.  For something different, let us try a little history.  I am sure that you have heard of General Douglas MacArthur.  He is probably best known for his statement, “I shall return!” when he was ordered to leave the Philippines in 1942, to avoid capture by the Japanese.  He is more infamously known for being relieved of duty from Korea by President Truman because he wanted to attack China.  I may simplify his life here.  He had a 50-year military career during which he was first in his class at West Point, served in WWI, WWII, and the Korean Conflict.  He was nominated for the Medal of Honor, which he did not receive, but was awarded The Silver Star and The Distinguished Service Cross multiple times.  There is a point to this, I promise.

Gen. MacArthur was put in charge of the Southwest Pacific area for WWII, was told he was not going to get supplies because it was a European war first and did not get cooperation from the Navy.  Despite the authorities handicapping him in this way, the General campaigned to retake New Guinea and in doing so tied up massive amounts of Japanese resources and troops and made it easier for the Navy to win the Pacific war.  He was a great Leader at a time when the Country needed one.

Now we shift to the present and President Joe Biden.  He also has a 50-year career in public service.  He took a small majority in the House and a 50-50 Senate and managed to get several pieces of legislation passed to improve the lives of all Americans.  He produced and distributed the COVID vaccine that broke the back of the pandemic.  Note that the vaccine was developed during the Trump Administration, but there was no real plan to produce it in quantity, so there was a delay in distribution by the Biden Administration.  Joe repaired the NATO Alliance, just soon enough to dampen Russian aggression in Ukraine.  We have $35 insulin, resurgent Union activity and 3.5% unemployment.  People are beginning to understand that the economy is in fine shape.  President Joe Biden has been a great leader at a time when the Country needed one.

Now is not the time to abandon the President who has had the most consequential Presidency since LBJ or FDR.  Pick the predecessor you like.  Now is not the time for voters who love democracy to stand by because you dislike his age, his stance on Israel, his border policy, or even his son!  If we allow Donald Trump a second term, we may very well end up with a theocratic oligarchy.  This may happen because we know who controls Republicans in Congress, and it’s not the constituents who vote for them.  When your Social Security check is reduced or fails to appear, it’s too late.  When you get hurt on the job and find there is no workers compensation and all you get is fired, it’s too late.  When regulations have been removed and your food is poisoning you or your water is destroyed, it’s too late.

There is one thing we can do to show our support for democratic values and that is to support Democratic Candidates.  There are currently two petition signing events scheduled for Jefferson County, one in Punxsutawney on Feb 4th, and one in Brookville on Feb. 7th, and hopefully one to be scheduled in Brockway.  Details are posted in the Calendar block below.  The Punxsutawney event is the only one to have Candidates present.  The other events are for the convenience of voters who either cannot or do not want to travel.  All registered Jefferson County Democrats are welcome to attend.  Registrations can be updated instantly online, and voters can immediately sign.  See you at one of these events!

Donations Needed and Accepted

The Jefferson County Democratic Committee (JeffDems) is funded through donations (we do not get funding from the state). We rely on the generosity of local Democrats to enable all of our initiatives and hopefully, in August – November, an Office/HQ to function as “JeffDems Central” before the critical Fall Election. Please make it one of your New Year’s resolutions, to start a monthly recurring donation to JeffDems, large or small, using the ActBlue link below, or of course, one-time donation checks are welcome! Contribute so that your county committee can do more on your behalf. Thank you!
