IT’S MONDAY! again and the last Monday of 2022. What a consequential Monday it has turned out to be for Democrats and Democracy supporters. The Jan. 6th Committee sent criminal referrals to the Justice Department, citing four different statutes, suggesting that Donald John Trump should be prosecuted for violations of said statutes. There is no requirement for the Justice Department to act, nor does it guarantee a guilty verdict if prosecution is undertaken. It does, however, take a large step toward doing what is needed, and that is to hold a former President accountable for his actions. We say no one is above the law, and so the actions of the Committee go a long way toward proving that point.
The Committee Report is or will be available soon. Everyone should obtain a copy and read it through. Attorney General Merrick Garland and Special Prosecutor Jack Smith will evaluate the evidence and question witnesses in their own time and decide whether or not to prosecute, but the evidence has largely been assembled and presented to the public for us to decide guilt or innocence in our own minds. Be aware that Trump is not the only one whose head is on the block here. There were many other actors involved, both high-ranking officials in the administration and elected members of Congress. We may never see Trump incarcerated. That doesn’t mean we should not try, and there are certainly others around him who deserve scrutiny.
Ultimately, the people who will or will not make the political correction are the voters. Whether or not we send Trump to prison, it is the voters who must clean this up and vote out anyone who has attempted to steal democracy from the people. Yes, we have problems to solve, and the answers are rarely simple or easy, but if we persevere, we will make progress, and isn’t that the point? Every election, every vote.
I hope Christmas was good for you. Have a Happy New Year!
