ItsMonday

It’s Monday! 3/11/2024

Well, it’s Monday again and for the first time in a while, I don’t have to rant or scream about the political lie of the week. So, let us bask in the sunshine, for now, while we have the chance. We are immersed in a world of abbreviations and acronyms such as CIA, FBI, IRS, DOJ, BFF, OMG, POTUS, and others. We instinctively know what they stand for. When we hear the IRS, what pops into our heads is, income tax. For social media users, OMG means, oh my god. You all, I believe, catch my drift here. Now you can imagine my confusion, and maybe it is just me, when I started to hear and see the term SOTU, not something readily recognizable in our everyday discourse. What I mean is it does not trigger the same instant memory that FBI would.

Then I realized that SOTU meant State of the Union Address. Bingo! I am here to tell you that last week POTUS delivered his SOTU address, and it was magnificent. To use a baseball adage, he hit it out of the park, but like a fast ball delivered to center field, deep upper deck! It was a little bit of a campaign speech, but The President challenged Republicans in areas where they should be challenged, in a way they should be challenged. For those who wondered, where is Joe Biden? Why don’t Democrats fight? I think you have your answer. Was it coincidental that The State of the Union followed on the heels of Super Tuesday, maybe. Was it coincidental that Joe Biden is following this up with a speaking tour designed to reinforce his points, probably not.

One of the first things addressed was women’s issues and the right to choose. Biden said, if you give me a Democratic Congress, we will fix it. He then prodded the Republicans by telling them women have political capital and power, and they were about to find out just how much. He touched on immigration, throwing the border bill back at them by reminding them, it was their bill that they wrote and then rejected. Then he suggested that solving the problem is not what they want.

The President bragged on his accomplishments and with Build Back Better, he even called out Republican members of Congress for standing in the front row taking credit for project money they voted against. Our own Glenn Thompson has done that. The economy, democracy, and Putin were touched on, all in a way that damaged the right-wing negative spin.

We all can be confident that us Democrats will not be sitting on our hands this election cycle. We will fight up and down the ballot for freedom, choice and what is right for all Americans and not the select few. President Biden admitted to being old but noted that physical age is secondary to the age of ideas. We want to move forward socially and economically for all Americans in the Spirit of The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution, not backward into some property-based reading that does not recognize individual rights. We can do better! We can do more!

Donations Needed and Accepted

The Jefferson County Democratic Committee (JeffDems) is funded through donations (we do not get funding from the state). We rely on the generosity of local Democrats to enable all of our initiatives and hopefully, in August – November, an Office/HQ to function as “JeffDems Central” before the critical Fall Election. Please make it one of your New Year’s resolutions, to start a monthly recurring donation to JeffDems, large or small, using the ActBlue link below, or of course, one-time donation checks are welcome! Contribute so that your county committee can do more on your behalf. Thank you!
