Yes, IT’S MONDAY! It appears that “Demstock 23” at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds is moving forward. The committee has forwarded the deposit to the Jefferson County Fair Board and the Contract if not signed, will be in the near future. Planning is in full swing, and we are working to develop a full slate of speakers who are current candidates or who may be running in 2024. Advocacy groups are encouraged to set up a table and educate the attendees about their cause and speak at the afternoon forum. A great dinner will be served on Saturday. More will be planned. It’s going to be a great weekend where you don’t have to look over your shoulder when you are talking politics because there won’t be anyone to disagree with you. I would like to see a lot of Jefferson County Democrats attend and I will need some to volunteer as staff for the event when I know what is needed. Save the dates, Aug. 11-13.
Last week we talked a little about our core values and how we should defend them. It shouldn’t be a difficult task to turn Republican actions on their heads and make a case for democracy. Four years out from the Trump Administration’s great plan to separate children from their families, there are still almost 1,000 who have disappeared into the United States, and nobody knows where they are or what happened to them. Trump immigration officials did not feel the need to keep records. Instead of fighting human trafficking, Trump facilitated it. They like to talk about creating good-paying jobs but not one Republican will support raising the minimum wage. They talk about free speech and then they ban books. They talk about freedom of religion and then they use religion as a means of discrimination.
What we do know is that true freedom lies in the spirit of equality espoused by our founding documents. The prime enabler of that freedom and equality is our willingness to respect each other. There are people leaving the Republican party every day. They may not become Democrats but they are former Republicans. We may not see a great change in our county, but if we offer a rational value set to the right people, we may get their vote. My Mom always told me that you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.
