Say Hey, all! Another Monday, another week on the Merry-Go-Round of fools. Does anyone get the impression that we are watching a man with dementia try to run the country? The latest thing we are living through is the Tariff fiasco. They are on one day and then off the next. No wait, maybe they are just paused, but let’s increase them on China. The utter chaos of what we are viewing is the staple of Trump’s agenda. Flood the zone with as many items as possible, thus creating confusion, and some of it will slip through unnoticed. This is all important, which is why opposition is important, which is why we should continue to oppose. Perhaps, what may be a bigger problem may be the next big lie. The Trump administration has appeared to knuckle under to pressure from the Courts, and the public, and restore some people to work, and some money back to programs. We get some reassuring drabble from the news media, but the reality is that it’s not happening. We must keep up the pressure, even with mixed success, because there must be an alternative to what is being offered. Remember, it took years to break through on civil rights in the last century. Believe it or not, it looks like we are revisiting that battle in this century.
As we speak to these realities, what we can do, what we should do, is exactly what we are doing. Keep on writing letters to the editor. We have had an exceptional response getting letters published in both The Spirit and the Indiana Gazette. They are our local megaphone to shout out our concerns to our community. Our friends and neighbors read those letters. It may be a way for you to have a longer conversation with someone who disagrees with you than you ever could have in person. Anyone can write a letter. If you have a personal connection to the issue, write about it. Stick to the issue at hand and refrain from making personal insults and accusations.
Another good way to apply pressure is through the rally protests that seem to be popping up every two weeks or so. We are engaging in a 50-50-1 backed protest this coming Saturday from 1pm to 2:30pm on the Mahoning St. sidewalk in front of Barkley Square. Hands Off signs will be waved at cars passing by. Wednesday afternoon between 1pm and 3pm you can make a sign at the office. Materials will be available during office hours also, 4-7pm. We need to participate in this manner. Our community is no less important than any other. Jefferson County residents will be hurt by reductions in veteran’s care and Medicaid. Cuts to food banks will be felt on the street where you live. If Social Security is destroyed it will affect about one half of Jefferson County. Please join in. This is the first, not the last, time we will stand up for what is right.
Wednesday 7pm, at the office, will be the third in our Discussion series. Bridget Shaffer is scheduled to present on what we can do and show us how we can respond to the craziness we are living. I hope to see you there.
Be active, stay active, it’s your future.
